The APA film citation is the standardized editorial style developed by the American Psychological Association, or APA, to cite electronic sources such as motion pictures, which include film, DVD, and other video formats, in writing research papers. Typically, APA film citations consist of important elements such as the name of the film or movie director, the producer, the year of film’s release, the title of the film or movie (in italics), the country where motion picture was made, and the studio.
To write an APA film citation you must start by writing the last name of the director, followed by a comma and the initial of his first name. Add a period followed by “(Director).” Follow this data by adding the copyright year and enclose it in parentheses. Add a period. Type the title of the movie in italics, followed by its identification “[Motion Picture].” Type the country of origin and the studio.
In citing your film sources, please use the following APA citation format:
Name of the producer (Producer), & Name of the director (Director). (Year of release). Title [Medium]. Country of origin: Distributor.
Below are some generic examples of an APA film citation:
Cameron, J. (Director). (1997). Titanic. [Motion Picture]. United States: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation.
